biography
Type O Negative was formed in 1990 by lead singer Pete Steele who previously lead thrash band
Carnivore, and his friend Sal Abrusco. The band slowed down thrash metal to achieve a new
style and was instantly labeled gloom metal for the lyrical styling.
The first album released in 1991 was entitled Slow, Deep and Hard, which featured tracks like
“Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelty” which was a track about Pete’s
girlfriend sleeping around.
In 1992 the band released “The Origin Of The Feces” after realizing that their contract stated
that they needed to release a live album. After spending all the money that was paid to them
to make the album on cheap vodka and other lifestyle choices. They re-recorded their first album
in a studio and overdubbed “live crowd” onto it. To add authenticity to the “live” recording the band
stops midway through a song for a supposed bomb scare.
1993 saw the release of Bloody Kisses which bought the band some fame with MTV in the US
playing Black No.1 in good rotation. The band constantly toured during this period which also
expanded their fan base.
October Rust was released in 1996 with the bands new drummer Johnny Kelly taking the place of
Sal Abruscato who left to form Life Of Agony. The album debuted at 42 on the Billboard Charts, and
featured such tracks as “My Girlfriends Girlfriend”, “Love You to Death”, and a cover of Neil Young’s
Cinnamon Girl.
In 1999, World Coming Down was released and debuted on the Billboard Charts at 39. This was
a glorious payoff for the band who had toured the world playing to sell out crowds.
The Least Worst of Type O Negative was released in 2000. The band mocking themselves by doing
a remix of “The Misinterprataion of Silence and It’s Disastrous Consequences” with the only
difference to the original track being a shorter play time. The track featured nothing but silence
with the band claiming that sometimes silence is their best work.
2003 bought the release of Life Is Killing Me, in which the band picked up their pace and released
some faster tracks. Most of the songs on the album were a lot shorter than previous albums, and
included a 7 and a half minute song called “How Could She” which was basically a list of female
characters from TV shows.
Dead Again was the last album Type O Negative released in 2009. It debuted at 27 on the Billboard
Charts. In 2010 the bands lead singer Pete Steele died of Heart failure and the band disbanded
as it wouldn’t have been the same without him.
